Sophie Slater
Sophie Slater is a freelance fashion print designer with over 12 years experience designing for womenswear. By keeping up-to-date with the latest catwalk and retail trends, she creates beautiful and contemporary textile print designs for a wide range of clients and products.
As well as having worked in-house creating many top-selling designs from florals to animal prints and geometrics to abstracts, Sophie has also worked for several London print studios and sold designs to various brands across the world including H&M, Nike, Victoria’s Secret, River Island, Gap and Calvin Klein.
Her goal is to work with brands who are making conscious decisions about how and where their clothing is made. Sophie is committed to emphasising the ethical treatment of textile and garment workers as well as more environmentally friendly processes and materials.
How Sophie works
Sophie creates her designs using a range of media and techniques to achieve her client’s vision, from hand painting and drawing to creating digital elements on her iPad. With the growing use of AI technology, Sophie feels it’s more important than ever to retain the hand-crafted quality of her print and textile designs.
She can create one-off prints or build full ranges with a variety of designs that work together in a collection. Understanding a brand or client’s aesthetic and customer base is a vital part of the design process. Whether creating one print or many, it’s about designing something that people will want to wear and ultimately feel good in.
As a designer, Sophie draws inspiration from many influences. Together with sources such as runway shows, trend-forecasting sites and fashion stores, she also takes inspiration from her daily life - whether that be from an art exhibition or simply some flowers spotted in a garden. Sophie also loves to travel and often finds inspiration in the architecture, fashion and culture of other countries.
